Taiwan Products Poised for Take-Off, after ECFA

Source: Taiwantrade | Updated: 11 November 2010

In the past, to avoid the tariff cost of importing parts and components from Taiwan, most of China’s end-product manufacturers would request Taiwanese parts-and-components suppliers to relocate and invest in China. Or, some of the machinery equipment and raw materials would be purchased in China to lower production cost. After ECFA went into effect, the import cost of Taiwanese goods to China will be greatly reduced which will increase the willingness of Taiwanese companies or other foreign companies in China to purchase supplies from Taiwan. At the same time, because the quality of Taiwan-produced goods is better than that of China-made goods, with the lowering of import cost, the competitiveness of Taiwan-made end-products will be significantly raised vis-à-vis Chinese goods in China.

In addition, the tariff on goods imported from Taiwan to China is lower than the tariff on American, European and Japanese goods. On top of the opening of “Big-Three-Direct-Links” of trade, mail, and air and shipping services across the Taiwan Strait, as well as benefits and assistance offered by the Taiwan government to foreign enterprises to set up research and development centers in Taiwan, after ECFA, Taiwan is now the number one location for multinational corporations to establish their “global innovation center” and “hub of Asia-Pacific trading.” In other words, Taiwan has officially become the priority partner and gateway to enter the China market for foreign investors.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), with the most resources on Taiwanese suppliers, has set up a “Christmas Celebration – Everything under US$50” sample-product sourcing center on November 1, providing all kinds of premium made-in-Taiwan (MIT) products.
