State-run Enterprises Begin Carbon Capture Efforts

Source: Taiwantrade | Updated: 27 October 2011

In line with world trends, the government and state-invested enterprises formed a strategic alliance in late 2010 to develop carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The alliance, formed by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), the Council for Economic Planning and Development, the National Science Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Energy, Industrial Development and Mines bureaus, and state-invested Taiwan Power Co., CPC Corp. Taiwan, and ChinaSteel Corp., plans to complete a pilot project for storing 10,000 metric tons of CO2 by 2015, and hopes to begin commercial operations by 2020.

The CCS process works by capturing CO2 from large point sources, such as fossil fuel power plants, and storing it in such a way that keeps it out of the atmosphere.
