Plant Factory Technology Highlights LED Trade Show

Source: Taiwantrade | Updated: 31 August 2012

Plant factories are highly controlled, sterile gardens for growing vegetables without soil or sunlight.
At the center of the trade show was a zone that showcased new technologies used to grow of plants in environments where lighting, temperature, humidity, water and carbon dioxide are controlled. The plant factories could ensure stable production in an era when erratic climate patterns and industrial pollution brought food shortage and safety to the fore.
Among the latest technologies on display were sunlight-simulating LEDs and an LED-lit plant warehouse developed by a Taiwanese manufacturer where vegetables high in nutrients and low in bacteria and nitrates can be grown in an environment uncontaminated by dirt and insects.
The global market of plant factories is expected to reach US$72 billion this year, according to the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
