A team from NCU and NCTU researching optical fiber recently developed a chipset capable of zipping through a 40GB Blu-ray Disc in just one second (or 40Gbps).
The optical fiber chipset is roughly 80 times faster than the conventional USB which offers a data transfer rate just under 0.5Gbps.
At 0.5cm by 0.5cm the new chipset is also the world’s smallest of its kind.
The team is in the process of obtaining multiple patents from Japan, the U.S., EU, and China.
The annual market value of USB is close to USD$10 billion. This new optical fiber connector could well be Taiwan’s answer to the next big optical revolution.
