The U.S. government announced a new standard in fuel efficiency. The new standard, 54.5mpg, almost doubles the current standard of 27.8mpg (11.8km/l).
The U.S. government plans to reach the goal of 35.5mpg by 2016. From then on fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles must increase by 5% annually till 2025; small trucks and SUVs by 3.5% annually till 2021 and then 5% annually from 2022 till 2025.
Major Asian car makers including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai all suggested the new standard posed huge challenges. Car makers must now develop breakthrough technologies within a relatively short time frame.
