Large Sporting Events Heat Up Working-Out & Fitness Clubs in China (Part 1)

Source: Taiwantrade | Updated: 17 November 2010

The General Administration of Sport of China announced in 2009 that August 8 of every year would be the “National Working-Out Day.” The currently happening Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games and the Universiade Shenzhen 2011 next year, are  examples that large sporting events are popular in China. Sports media as a result have been promoting fitness and working-out for all people, which have also gained support from national professional associations. As national fitness awareness is increasing, fitness equipment will become a rising star industry in China.

Ever since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the number of fitness clubs has grown drastically in China. As people’s consumption power rises, their health awareness also becomes stronger. Investments in fitness related products likewise expand, which has gradually turned from investment in passive, therapeutic type of fitness activities to more active, preventive, and health-protection ones.

The manufacturing revenue of sporting goods in China in 2009 was 64.6 billion China yens (CNY) (US$9.73 billion), which grew 6.29% compared to the year before. At present the fitness equipment industry in China is developing. More and more new manufacturers are going into the market, and the existing manufacturers are also expanding their factories to consolidate the market. Some industry insiders have even boldly estimated that China’s fitness equipment market will reach CNY$100 billion (US$15.06 billion).
